Overview

Overview 
This 3-credit studio course is a requirement of all graphic design majors and minors, and along with Intro to Typography, forms the foundational introduction to graphic design principles. The purpose of Form and Concept is for you to gain knowledge and skill in regard to the creative and problem solving aspects of graphic design and to develop a critical perspective on its conceptual, formal and technical merits. Prerequisites: Art 013 2-D Design, Art 015 Drawing I and Art 021 Digital Media

Objectives
Form and Concept focuses on the effective formal organization of visual elements and the underlying concepts that influence this process. You are encouraged to utilize skills learned in foundational courses and to develop compositional skills in an individualistic manner. By defining visual communication problems in ways that reflect your personal interests, as well as clients, audiences/users, contexts, and production criteria, you will develop a deeper and broader understanding of how to make and effect meaning.

Conceptually, this course will enable you to:
  • Develop an awareness of the creative process
  • Conceptualize multiple solutions to a problem
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of methods and approaches to problem-solving
  • Use research and reflection as a catalyst for problem solving
  • Become self-critical and detail oriented

Formally, this course will enable you to:
  • Utilize the principles of composition to transmit meaning, values and order information
  • Analyze a designed object's context and develop appropriate and effective graphic form
  • Use systems, text, image, composition, motion and sound, to create and support content
  • Cycles of iteration, critique, and editing, will lead to refine compositional skills

Technically, this course will enable you to:
  • Develop an understanding of the designer's relationship to technology
  • Develop appreciation of technologies role in the creation and reproduction of visual messages
  • Explore techniques for presentations and develop a range of handcraft skills­
  • Strive for perfection and learn the difference between the average and the exceptional.
